Origins of the Pixiu

The Pixiu is said to be descended from a dragon and a qilin (麒麟) (a Chinese mythical creature also known as the “Chinese Unicorn”). The dragon represents Yang energy, while the qilin represents Yin energy. Together, they symbolize balance and harmony – two essential concepts in Feng Shui. Pixiu is believed to be the 9th off spring of the dragon.

The creature first appeared in literature during the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), where it was described as a strong and ferocious beast that had the head of a dragon, the body of a horse, and the tail of a lion. In ancient times, the Pixiu was considered to be a powerful protector against evil spirits, and it was often used in amulets and talismans to ward off evil.

The Meaning of the Pixiu

The Chinese character for “Pixiu” (貔貅) is actually made up of two parts: “Pi” (貔), which means to “ward off” or “protect”; and “Xiu” (貅), which means “auspicious” or “lucky”. Together, the character symbolizes a creature that wards off evil spirits and brings good luck.

The Pixiu is also associated with the Chinese concept of yin and yang. The Pixiu is said to have the head of a dragon (a Yang symbol) and the body of a lion (a Yin symbol). Together, they represent the perfect balance of Yin and Yang energy.

The legend goes that the Pixiu was once a powerful dragon that flew too close to the sun and was scorched by its heat. As a result, it lost its ability to fly and could only walk on the ground.
