Natural Jadeite vs Treated Jadeite Jade? (Grades A, B, & C)

| Jackson Hunter
Jade is an amazing gem that represents good luck, prosperity, and safety. With the right person that appreciates the gemstone, you will feel the positive energies that radiates off the jade. Leading you to a better, healthier, more positive life.

The million dollar question : Do I have Natural or Treated jade?

"What's the difference?" "How do I tell if this is natural real jadeite jade? " "How do I tell between fake and natural real Jade?" are some of the most asked questions that we get.

And to fully understand the answers to that question we must know what makes a piece of jade (regardless of nephrite or jadeite) real or fake.

Jade Grading: In Asia

Grade A: All natural, without treatment jade. Believed to offer protection and good fortune for whoever possesses the gem.

Grade B: Treated Jadeite Jade with Acid/ Polymer impregnation.

Grade C: Treated plus dyed color in with Acid, Polymer Impregnation.

Grade D (AKA: Fake Jade) -  They are imitation, stimulants, such as glass, or resin, or plastic...

But GIA didn't tell A,B,C,D types. They only show you if it's impregnated or not. if it's impregnated jade is treated jade, or color dyed. So, we only talk about real jade or fake jade. Impregnated jade is not good for you also.

Brief history of treated jade:

"There are two types of treatments for jadeite jade. Dye and polymer impregnation - often used together.

Dyed jadeite has existed for decades and is detectable using standard spectroscopy. It was not common before the 1980’s.

In the early 1980's a new kind of jadeite appeared in the markets of East Asia. This material had a light, bright body color and good translucence. Some dealers noticed a ‘spidery’ texture when viewed under 20x magnification. Prices were reasonable for such quality - too reasonable - based on values at the time. This marked the beginning of what has since been called ‘B’ jade, which continues to be by far the most common form of treated jade."

What real jade really is

Here at real jade, natural Jade is referring to the jade that has not treatments done to it. Undyed, not bleached or polymer impregnated. Technically, jade that has been treated is still considered real jade because after all it still is jade. But most people consider that fake jade.

Usually the color of the jade is not completely even. One of the main tell tale signs of treated jade is that the jade is very green through out. This rings true especially with bangles. Also depending on what kind of jade, the color will vary. For example, the color for nephrite jade is usually very even dark green. And jadeite jade is usually white with faint green lavender colors (and of course among other colors). But high quality jade is the brighter, more vibrant green color.

Take Aways

All in all jade is an amazing gem that represents good luck, prosperity, and safety. With the right person that appreciates the gemstone, you will feel the positive energies that radiates off the jade. Leading you to a better, healthier, more positive life.
